The Westerville Central Football team continued its undefeated season on Friday with a 44-14 road victory against Canal Winchester.
The Warhawks started the game running on all cylinders. Quarterback Gavin Lyon threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Cedric Frierson, putting the Warhawks ahead 6-0 due to a missed extra point. Following a defensive stop by the Central defense, the offense took the ball into the end zone for a second time, thanks to a nine-yard touchdown run by running back Benny Snell.
Before the end of the first quarter, the Indians and Warhawks would score one more time each. Canal Winchester quarterback Andre Bradley threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Harrison-Rawn to cut the Warhawks’ lead to 13-7, but Lyon responded to the score with a 61-yard touchdown run to put Central ahead 20-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Warhawks were able to extend their lead by two touchdowns in the second quarter. The first touchdown came on the ground by Snell, who ran the ball in one yard into the end zone for his second touchdown of the game. The second touchdown came through the air, Frierson caught his second touchdown pass of the game, but this time the 22-yard pass came from quarterback Nate Jackowski.
Westerville Central went into halftime leading 34-7, but second half would not be as explosive as the first. The score remained the same during the entire third quarter, but the leg of Central kicker Alex Barnhart put an end to the silence with a 32-yard field goal for the first score of the fourth quarter.
The Warhawks scored once more in the fourth quarter with a two-yard run by Ray Williams and the Indians scored one more touchdown before the end of the game, putting the final score at 44-14.
Jackowski’s 148 passing yards marked the highest total since he threw 274 yards against New Albany on September 9. He also eclipsed the 800 passing yards for the season against Canal Winchester on Friday.
Despite posting his lowest amount of rushing yards this season, Snell scored two rushing touchdowns, marking the fourth-consecutive game in which he has score two or more touchdowns on the ground. He currently has nine rushing touchdowns and 653 rushing yards this season.
Frierson recorded a season high of 130 receiving yards against Canal Winchester on Friday. He averaged 32.5 yards in his four receptions against the Indians. This was also Frierson’s second game of the season in which he scored two touchdowns in the air and recorded over 100 yards receiving. He had not accomplished that since the Warhawks’ 43-13 win at New Albany on September 5.
With the win, Central’s record is now 5-0 (2-0 OCC-Cardinal) and Canal Winchester falls to 1-4 (0-2 OCC-Cardinal). The Warhawks remain in first place in the OCC-Cardinal Conference and the Indians fall to seventh place.
The Warhawks will return to Westerville Central High School this Friday for the 2014 Homecoming game against Hilliard Bradley at 7:30. Stay tuned to the Westerville Central Athletics Twitter account (@Athletics_WCHS) for more information as tickets will be made available for preorder this week.
